At Squirrel, putting together wholesome, nutritious meals made with fresh ingredients has always been at the forefront of what we do. This has numerous health advantages, including providing supportive foods and nutrients for the immune system. In our opinion, a diet full of colour and a variety of vegetables will all be helping keep your health at its best at some level. Here’s a run down on what all our Treehouse Favourites have to offer to help give your body plenty of goodness during a time when we could all do with plenty of it! And what’s more, it’s all available on Deliveroo and through our Click & Collect app (Squirrel -Nuts About Health).
A combination of some of our favourite immune-supporting ingredients – mushrooms, broccoli and spinach! In particular, mushrooms are a source of beta-glucans, a polysaccharide that supports gut health and the immune system, whilst broccoli is rich in vitamin C – a well-known immune-supporting nutrient.
Thai Me Up
Did you know that red peppers contain MORE vitamin C than citrus fruits? Teamed with antioxidant-rich red cabbage, this dish will be sure to give your immune system some much-needed support.
Oh My Cobb
Being a kale-based dish, our Oh My Cobb is packed with an impressive nutrient profile as well as antioxidants, including vitamin C that help to protect cells from damage. In addition, vitamin C is essential for the production of white blood cells – an important type of cell of the immune system.
Sweet potatoes in our Kale Yeah are a great source of fibre, which is often forgotten about in nutrition – but getting a variety of fibres in our diets is important to maintain good gut health and feeding good bacteria in our digestive tract. Sweet potatoes also contain beta carotene, which converts to vitamin A in the body and is important for white blood cell production.
Our Burrito Bowl is made with a base of spinach and rocket. Both leafy greens are rich in vitamins and minerals including vitamin C and beta carotene. These nutrients are important for supporting white blood cell production.
One of the star ingredients in our Carroty Kid is kimchi, a fermented Chinese cabbage containing probiotic, aka good bacteria. A healthy gut is the cornerstone to good immune function, as so much of the immune system resides in the digestive tract.
Our Ginger Spice is mixed with our favourite immune-supporting dressing containing carrot, ginger and miso. Miso is a fermented food that feeds friendly bacteria in the gut, helping to aid digestion and enhance immunity, while ginger contains potent oils that may help to ease the symptoms of colds and flu, as well as headaches.
Guac ‘n’ Roll
One of our favourite ingredients in our Guac ’n’ Roll is the pickled red onion, which not only provides a unique taste, but also contains properties that have antibacterial and antiviral actions. In addition, onion is considered a prebiotic food, one that feeds good bacteria in the digestive tract – indirectly supporting the immune system, since so much of the immune system resides in the digestive tract.
